Elearning is truly taking in the corporate world by storm. There is no need for corporations to make a fuss when there are software roll-outs for example. However, there are some issues also that may be addressed by simple elearning modules designed to help not just the productivity of each employee but also to boost their morale by helping them out in their personal issues.

What is the nature of laziness? There are some companies where laziness in the workforce is becoming a significant strain on productivity. One might think that there is an easy solution to this problem such as disciplinary sanctions. However, there are many cases when this alone is not enough. You see the real problem is most indolence in the office is not monitored. It is hard to catch and it does not blip in the company’s radar. The most common instance of this is when an employee is starting to give low quality work. By low quality, it is something that is passable but it is certainly not the best that he or she can do. Sometimes, the only solution to this is termination or at least suspension. Also, sometimes a whole section will ask for more time for their work when in truth they can actually finish the work at a shorter space of time (such is the common issue in computer programming sections). However, in retrospect, there may be a more effective solution to this (a simple, low cost elearning module). Direct reprimand may actually, as in most cases, only make productivity go lower.

Using elearning as a way to motivate people can take some creativity. Laziness really is usually a problem that comes from the lack of self motivation. Simply elucidate the process that helps self motivation as well as some great working tips and principles (such as the fact that overworking may sometimes lead to a burnout etc.)

Faith is something magical. It is what drives people to believe in themselves and others, to advocate a cause, or to spend time and effort to prove a point. It is what makes ordinary people do extraordinary faith just because they believe they can and that they have to.

Faith is a necessity in making a pact with God. When you believe in the power of the Lord, you gain the inspiration and determination to walk the path or righteousness. And no matter how many trials or tribulations come lashing at your away, you would not be fazed because your faith would not let you run away or abandon the promise that you have made with God. It is faith that gives you the courage to keep on living despite all the negativities and prosecution surrounding your belief.

However, faith cannot be achieved overnight. You would have to go through a lot of tests and trials for your faith to mature. Prophet Elijah’s story is a great example of how ones faith could be developed. He was given a purpose by God which he refused initially. He tried turning away from the work that God has for Him, but in the end, his faith won over his doubts until he was able to fulfill his destiny to save God’s people. He faced a lot of tribulations – He was chased into hiding, his life was often in danger, and people mocked him for his faith. All of these were part of the bigger plan that God has for Him. In the end, the skills and emotional strength he gained from the trials he went through helped him fulfill God’s task for him.

Do not give up in the face of trials, and when you feel like you’re at the brink of losing grip, hold on to your faith. It is your belief that God has a purpose for you that could keep you moving forward.

In an industry where people capitalize on good looks to earn money, it is often hard to reconcile your own Christian beliefs with all the worldly pressure surrounding you. This is what most Christian celebrities have to deal with everyday. While they want to profess and live their Christian faith, the entertainment industry just does not seem to be the best place to nurture such a clean way of life. On the other hand, there are still some entertainment personalities who were able to live up to their Christian faith despite all the pressures in Hollywood. One of such is Sugarland, a country music group who was made famous in the US.

Sugarland is a powerhouse country duo from Mercury Nashville. Composed of singer Jennifer Nettles and guitarist Kristian Bush, the country music group has made records that boast of finesse and an outpour of emotions. Because of the band’s positive music, they have been featured in many Christian magazines for the clean living and positivism they are promoting in their songs.

Sugarland is not the only artist in the music biz who survived and gained a lot of popularity despite not advocating the negative rock and roll lifestyle. Tom DeLonge Angels and Airwaves frontman and Blink 182’s lead, and Mark Hoppus bass player of Blink 182 are also proud Christian musicians who were able to talk the talk and walk the walk in living their faith amidst their fame in Hollywood.

Truth vs. Tiara: The Carrie Prejean Case

When it comes to pageants, everybody expects svelte bodies and confident faces – not voices expressing honest opinions. Miss California and first runner up Miss USA 2009 Carrie Prejean exhibited all three of them in front of the millions of Americans watching the country’s most prestigious coronation night. She made headlines for stating an answer which went beyond “a beauty queen’s role in promoting world peace”.

During the second round of question and answer portion, Prejean was asked whether she believes that every US state should legalize same sex marriage. This was her response:

“Well I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one way or the other. We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. You know what, in my country, in my family, I do believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, no offense to anybody out there. But that’s how I was raised and I believe that it should be between a man and a woman.”

Her answer not only raised gay blogger and pageant judge Perez Hilton’s eyebrow, but also stirred up controversies among gay rights activists and marriage groups.

“The way Miss California answered, her question lost her the crown, without a doubt,” says Hilton. He even posted on his blog a video of Prejean with harsh comments and labels, stating that her answer was the worst in pageant history. Prominent gay-marriage supporters such as San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, however, criticized Hilton’s actions and defended Miss California for stating her personal beliefs.

California is the second state to say okay to same sex marriage in the US in mid-2008 after Massachusetts, but Prejean’s evangelical Christian upbringing taught her otherwise. She says “I was raised in a way that you can never compromise your beliefs and your opinions for anything.” Prejean, whose sister is also a gay rights activist, appeared on a television advertisement for the National Organization for Marriage opposing same sex marriage, following the pageant. “It did cost me my crown,” Miss California said, adding that she stated an opinion that was true to herself and she wouldn’t have had it any other way. Prejean believed that if she were given any other question, she could have won the pageant.

Aside from her modelling stints, Carrie Prejean wants to become a motivational speaker to young people, teaching them to stand up for they believe in. “That’s what’s so great about being an American – we’re able to have our own opinions,” she added.

If you are planning to watch films in the coming weeks then one of the films that you can go out and watch is Pixar’s Up. Not only is this film one of the most brilliantly designed pixar videos but it also boasts different values that you can reflect on.

You see, Carl is so obsessed with getting to Paradise Falls that he loses sight of the importance of relationships with others around him. When a little boy named Russell stows away on his flying house, Carl treats the child as little better than a nuisance. And once they’ve made it to South America, as Russell makes friends with a bird and a dog that they encounter, Carl sees the three of them as creatures who are only useful if they can help him get to his destination.

His goal isn’t a bad one. It’s even noble in a way, as he’s pursuing it partly in honor of his beloved late wife. It’s just blinded him to the needs, desires, and worth of others. It’s like C. S. Lewis wrote in Mere Christianity about pursuing good things in bad ways. He said, “Pleasure, money, power, and safety are all, as far as they go, good things. The badness consists in pursuing them by the wrong method, or in the wrong way, or too much.”

After reading some Christian magazines, I chanced upon a recent issue of GQ magazine and it has a nice article about Christian Bale. Known for his temper, Bale reminded me of how we as Christians should act with a calm mind. Here are some excerpts from that issue:

Sleeping on the set of Batman Begins, screaming on the set of Terminator Salvation; there’s a similar polarity between the early-morning Bale of our first interview and the late-afternoon Bale who shows up in the same spot the next day. Yesterday, the skulking fugitive. Today there are no Ray-Bans. He’s shaved. His skin is taut and braced, the lapidary facets of his face standing out in bold relief. His clothes are fresh-pressed and cut to fit. Even a man just rescued after thirty years on a desert island could tell you: That there’s a movie star.

He approaches, makes eye contact, smiles. Today the only topic Bale won’t brook is his alleged assault on his sister and mother the day before The Dark Knight premiered in London last July—the same month he delivered the Rant while shooting Terminator Salvation in New Mexico. He cuts off the subject with a casual chop of the hand. It is worth noting, though, that verbal abuse can fall under the legal definition of assault in England—and that the complaint was subsequently dropped for lack of evidence. On all other subjects, Bale holds forth amiably on everything from his childhood film acting to his abhorrence for photo sessions.

But not before duly (and yes, intensely) apologizing for being fifteen minutes late. (“No excuses…just shabby…sorry, really…”) By this point, I’ve listened to the Christian Bale Rant so many times that its capacity to appall has thinned; it now registers as opera. My favorite lyric, twice sung (both for emphasis and to overcome the oddness of issuing such a sentiment in a hateful shriek): You’re a nice guy. Shouting just won’t do, not here, so I lock into those black eyes and assume a confidential tone.

The Race of Faith and the Scenery of God’s Grace by Mike Pohlman, Editor, Christianity.com is an inspiration to me. There is a lot of things that you can read from a Christian magazine and this is one of the things that struck a special cord in my heart. Here are some of the excerpts:

Once there I remembered a gentleman talking about Belle Island and a 1.5 mile trail that loops through the 54 acre park that once housed a Civil War prison camp for Union soldiers. My pace picked up as I became excited about the destination. Along the nearly two mile journey I was pleasantly distracted by The American Civil War Center, the James River with its roaring rapids and the massive Robert E. Lee Bridge straddling the shores.

I was reminded anew how much easier runs are when you’re excited about the scenery. The legs don’t hurt as much, breathing isn’t as difficult and the pace actually quickens. More than just “getting the miles in,” you feel exhilaration in the exercise.

As I exited the pedestrian bridge onto Belle Island my thoughts moved to how the Christian life is like a run. It requires endurance, perseverance, diligent effort. And just as the scenery on a run helps one endure, the “scenery” of God’s grace helps weary saints persevere in their faith.

And while the issue of gay marriage rings true, I remember this article by Maggie Gallagher way back in 2003. here are some excerpts from her work and I feel that there are plenty of valid points that we can learn about.

GAY MARRIAGE is no longer a theoretical issue. Canada has it. Massachusetts is expected to get it any day. The Goodridge decision there could set off a legal, political, and cultural battle in the courts of 50 states and in the U.S. Congress. Every politician, every judge, every citizen has to decide: Does same-sex marriage matter? If so, how and why?

The timing could not be worse. Marriage is in crisis, as everyone knows: High rates of divorce and illegitimacy have eroded marriage norms and created millions of fatherless children, whole neighborhoods where lifelong marriage is no longer customary, driving up poverty, crime, teen pregnancy, welfare dependency, drug abuse, and mental and physical health problems. And yet, amid the broader negative trends, recent signs point to a modest but significant recovery.
Divorce rates appear to have declined a little from historic highs; illegitimacy rates, after doubling every decade from 1960 to 1990, appear to have leveled off, albeit at a high level (33 percent of American births are to unmarried women); teen pregnancy and sexual activity are down; the proportion of homemaking mothers is up; marital fertility appears to be on the rise. Research suggests that married adults are more committed to marital permanence than they were twenty years ago. A new generation of children of divorce appears on the brink of making a commitment to lifelong marriage. In 1977, 55 percent of American teenagers thought a divorce should be harder to get; in 2001, 75 percent did.

While watching the Philippine All stars professes their faith on youtube and a Christian magazine, I remembered American pastor Jonathan Edwards said a few years back. Used by God to spearhead a powerful revival in colonial New England, Edwards said churchgoers are “like the waters in the time of a shower of rain, which during the shower, and a little after, run like a brook and flow abundantly, but they are presently quite dry, and when another shower comes, then they will flow again. Whereas a true saint is like a stream from a living spring which, though it may be greatly increased by a shower of rain and diminished in time of drought, yet constantly runs.”

In this passage, you can see an example of a very righteous man that walked with God all the days of his life. May this serve as an inspiration to your own walk with God.

Genesis 5:18-24 (New International Version)

18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch.

19 And after he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Altogether, Jared lived 962 years, and then he died.

21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah.

22 And after he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters.

23 Altogether, Enoch lived 365 years.

24 Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.
